Daysailing may be over for the season, but we still have plenty going on in the winter including Caribbean Cruising CoursesFrostbite Racing, our Captain’s Licensing Course, and ASA 105 Coastal Navigation. Our winter hours are Monday to Friday from 10am to 5pm. 

Coastal Navigation

$510 Our Coastal Navigation course presents all the fundamental skills of navigation, with emphasis on the techniques most useful to the cruising sailor.

CONAVThe course meets at the BSC Riverboat from 6pm-8pm for 6 consecutive Tuesdays. Course fee includes the necessary charts, tools, and textbook.

Topics Include... 

The magnetic compass, use of the nautical chart, dead reckoning, various methods of fixing position, tides and tide tables, navigating in current, selection of anchorages, and rules of the road.

Classroom only, held in the Riverboat

Prerequisite 

None!

ASA 105 Coastal Navigation

Materials

Parallel Rules, Dividers, Training Chart, Coastal Navigation textbook - all included in course fee! 

Format

This course is six consecutive classroom sessions on Tuesdays starting in January or March from 6:00-8:00pm.

Rescheduling/Cancellation Policy: If you are unable to attend your course on the date you select, you may receive a full refund or reschedule your course up to your commitment date, which is 14 days prior to your start date. Thereafter, no refunds are allowed and the course may not be rescheduled.

Coastal Passage Making

$1785 Learn the skills required for making longer passages in coastal waters.

This 5-day sail aboard the C&C 38 (typically to Nantucket and returning outside Cape Cod) teaches advanced navigation and seamanship in the challenging waters of Buzzards Bay and the Atlantic. 

cpm bookCourse includes GPS, diesel engine trouble-shooting, day and night watches, nighttime landfalls and heavy weather skills. Throughout, we encourage high levels of responsibility and decision-making. Graduates will be prepared for a Cruising 40 membership, chartering worldwide or sailing their own large yacht in most conditions. Please see a recommended gear list here.

Format

Thursday-Monday: This course consists of a 5 day cruise from Thursday AM to Monday PM.

Students meet at 10:00am on Thursday and head for the Cape based on the current in the canal. Course ends on Monday afternoon.

Cruising Course

$1495 This course will prepare you for a Cruising 30 or Cruising 35 membership or for bareboat chartering in waters like the Virgin Islands.

Two evening sessions cover the mechanical and electrical systems of a full-size cruising boat, the navigation required for day and night sailing in coastal waters, and docking under power. 

CruisingThe full weekend sail teaches all the fundamental skills needed to charter and cruise successfully, including entering unfamiliar harbors, anchoring, sail handling, dinghy use and more. Fees include food and drink. See the recommended gear list here.

Wednesday-Sunday: The Cruising Course meets Wednesday to Sunday. (W/Th 6-9pm, Cruise Fri PM-Sun PM)

Classroom and on-board instruction are on Wednesday and Thursday evening from 6:00pm to 9:00pm for. Cruise leaves on Friday evening (typically around 5pm) and returns Sunday evening.
