BSC Cruising from Marion

The Harbor

Sippican Harbor, in the northwest corner of Buzzards Bay, has been a favorite of cruising sailors for generations. It's quiet and well-protected, with easy direct access to Buzzards Bay -- and without a trip through the Canal.

The town of Marion is small, primarily residential, and notably attractive.

The Boats

In 2013 we are mooring Thea (C40) and Anne (C35) with Burr Brothers in Sippican Harbor. They will be available to qualified Cruising 35 and Cruising 40 members for cruises starting and ending in Buzzards Bay throughout the season.

Cruising Information

For the BSC Online Cruising Guide's look at Marion and some of the harbors within easy cruising range, see the Buzzards Bay Regional Chart or Cape & Islands Regional Chart.

Qualified Members

The prerequisite for C35 and C40 members who wish to schedule their cruises out of Marion is the same as for members who wish to sail south of the Cape from the BSC. Specifically that means the Coastal Passage Making course or equivalent experience. All C40 & C35 members who wish to book a cruise out of Marion should have either taken CPM or have substantial cruising experience as skipper and/or crew beyond the Cruising Course. Please contact the BSC office with any questions.

Reservations

Cruises out of Marion will follow the same reservation system that we use in Boston, and will count as a member's high or low season cruise.

Schedule

A schedule of Marion-based cruise dates will be sent to members by early February. Each of the boats will be available for two ten-day "Solstice Cruises" in June. Beginning is July the boats will be available in full seven-day cruising blocks with a prep day in between. We expect they will also be available for daysailing on couple of summer weekends.

Cruises will officially begin when launch service starts on the first day (typically 8:00 am). They will end on the last day in time to have the boat put away properly and catch the launch in (the launch runs until at least 8:00 pm through most of the prime cruising season. Burr Bros launch schedule is here.

Pumpout & Fuel

The Harbormaster runs a pumpout boat that comes right to the mooring, and we understand they can pump out even if no one is on board. Members returning from a cruise are responsible for scheduling a pumpout before leaving the boat.

There is a fuel dock at Burr Brothers. Members returning from a cruise are responsible for leaving the boat with a full tank of diesel.

Support

To make our prep day maintenance more efficient, we will schedule a telephone check-in between members and the BSC manager on duty for the last afternoon of each Marion cruise.

Parking

There is free on-site parking, plus an overflow lot if needed.

Marina Facilities

There are coin-operated showers at the Marina.

Provisioning

There's a Stop & Shop on Route 6, about five miles away, and a small general store in town.

Outfitting

The closest West Marine is two towns south, in Fairhaven.
