Open House FAQs

Q. Do I need to make a reservation?
A.

No. This event is first-come, first-serve, which means we do not accept any advanced reservations. We will begin taking guests' names at 1:00, so simply check in when you arrive.

Q. How long should I expect to wait?
A. It depends! If the weather is good, expect a crowd. The sooner you arrive, the less you should have to wait. A typical wait ranges from 15 minutes to 2 hours - so if anyone in your party (small children, e.g.) would have trouble waiting that long, plan ahead.

Q. What ages are appropriate for this event?
A. We have life jackets available for children 2 and up, but you may bring younger children if they have their own life jacket. Taking a sailing trip does require stepping onboard from a floating, moving dock, so attendees should be physically fit enough to do so.

Q. What should I wear?
A. Wear non-marking shoes (sneakers are good), and comfortable clothes you wouldn't mind getting wet. (You won't go swimming, but the boats do occasionally get sprayed.) Also remember that it's typically 10 degrees cooler on the water, so dress in layers and be prepared for cooler temperatures.

Q. Do you offer refreshments?
A. We don't offer food, but we do have free beverages available to guests during the event.

Q. Are you offering discounts?
A. Yes! During our Open House, we offer a 10% discount on all courses, programs and memberships at the BSC. We will also have staff on hand to answer questions or sign you up!

Q. I can't come to the event. Can I still get a discount?
A.

Yes! Our discounts are available online or over the phone as well.

Q. Do I need to know how to sail to participate?
A.

No experience is necessary to attend this event. All of the boats will be skippered by experienced sailors, most of them members of our instructor staff.

You are welcome to just sit back and enjoy the ride, or participate by taking the helm or adjusting the sails. Ask your skipper to let you take a turn!

Q. What type of boats will I be sailing on?
A.

The Boston Sailing Center owns 65 boats of various types. During the Open House, we sail a range of our cruising boats, from 24 to 40 feet.

The boats leave and return to slips at our docks for easy boarding.

Q. I am coming with a group. Can we sail together?
A. Yes. We use boats that can accommodate groups as large as six people; so let us know when you check in and we will send you out together.

Q. How long are the trips?
A. The trips typically last 20 to 30 minutes - enough time to get out to the middle of the Harbor and back.

Q. What about parking?
A. There are several pay lots in the area, including one here at Lewis Wharf and one next door at Sargent's Wharf. Both lots (and most in the area) will charge about $15 for a full day of parking. There is also limited metered parking available in the North End.
